What we like

  • Lightweight and compact for its class
  • Comprehensive weather-sealing
  • Very sharp and free of most optical aberrations
  • Very fast autofocus
  • Handy multi-function OLED display
  • A choice of front or rear filters
  • Works well for video too

What we don’t

  • Wide open sharpness drops off quickly as you move away from image center
  • Bokeh can be distracting due to soap bubble effect
  • Double-edged bokeh in transitions zones
  • More expensive than its DSLR equivalent
  • Front filters are huge, expensive and require a bulky hood/lens cap

Conclusion from DPReview:

The Nikon Z 14-24mm F2.8 S brings its famed DSLR-era lens to its mirrorless format, in a more compact lightweight formula with an option for (albeit very large 112mm) filters. It’s sharp wide open at all focal lengths, and any corner softness is dealt with by stopping down a couple of stops. Autofocus is swift and silent, and aberrations are very well controlled, with only busy bokeh being our primary concern with this lens, optically.
