Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 Lens Officially Announced

Nikon has officially announced the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4, marking its first f/1.4 lens for the Z-mount mirrorless system. This introduction expands Nikon’s prime lens lineup, which previously included lenses with maximum apertures of f/1.2, f/1.8, and f/2.8.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is a wide-angle prime lens featuring a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, yet it is available at an affordable price. This lens allows photographers to enjoy the soft bokeh and three-dimensional rendering that make subjects stand out. Its 35mm focal length is versatile, suitable for a range of scenes and subjects, from landscapes and snapshots to portraits and close-ups of flowers and pets. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.27 meters, making it perfect for getting close to subjects like food and flowers while creating images with significant background bokeh.

Despite its wide aperture, the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 is compact, with a total length of approximately 86.5 mm and a weight of around 415 grams. This makes it similar in size to the NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S, ensuring ease of use for daily photography and quick snapshots. The lens offers superior optical performance with minimal chromatic aberrations, clear depiction, and sharp rendering when the aperture is stopped down, particularly beneficial for landscape photography.

Notably, the Z 35mm f/1.4 is not part of Nikon’s premium ‘S’ line and is priced lower than the 35mm f/1.8 S, debuting at $599 compared to the $849 price of the f/1.8 S. This pricing strategy makes it an attractive option for photographers seeking high-quality performance without the premium cost.

The lens is constructed with eleven elements in nine groups, including two aspherical elements. Its design and performance are distinct, suggesting it is not a re-badged lens from another manufacturer. It employs a stepper motor for autofocus and includes a customizable control ring.

The NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.4 can be used as a slight wide-angle lens on full-frame cameras or as a 53mm equivalent on Nikon’s DX APS-C cameras. It accepts 62mm filters and will be available in mid-July at a recommended price of $599.95.
